DRIVING SKILLS EVALUATION FORM
This evaluation level is designed for young riders or those with little riding experience. Riders must be able to demonstrate that they can walk, steer, and stop their horse or pony.

The participants that are evaluated at this level should demonstrate intermediate riding skills. Riders should know basic aids, have proper hand and body position, and be able to walk, jog/trot, and lope/canter their horse or pony with some consistency.

The participants that are evaluated at this level should demonstrate the ability to transition to more advanced skills. Riders must demonstrate everything from previous levels, good hand and body position, effectively use riding aids, and consistently walk, jog/trot, and lope/canter on the correct diagonal.

The participants that are evaluated at this level should demonstrate advanced riding skills. Riders must be able to demonstrate all skills in previous levels and be able to lope/canter their horse or pony on the correct lead consistently and show overall proficiency in their riding abilities.

The participants that are evaluated at this level should demonstrate exceptional riding skills. Riders must demonstrate skills from all previous levels, excellent hand and body position, master the use of riding aids, and demonstrate consistency in lope/canter transitions, as well as advanced techniques such as collection and extension in their horse’s gait.

Mounted Skills Evaluation – Virtual Submission Instructions
The “Mounted Skills Evaluation” can now be completed virtually. Please email a video of your mounted test to an approved evaluator.
Email Submission Requirements:
Subject Line: Horsemaster Evaluation for [Rider’s Name]
Email Body: Include the following details:
Rider’s Name
Age
4-H Club
Level being tested for
Video Requirements:
Follow the instructions outlined in the respective Horsemaster Level Written Test.
Record the video in landscape mode.
Position the camera either alongside the rail outside the arena or from the center of the arena.
Please do not zoom in closely; the evaluator must see a portion of the arena.
The video must be one continuous segment with no splicing or editing.
If not specified, the maneuver or gait asked for should be continued for half of the arena to give the evaluator ample time to critique the maneuver. (i.e. right lead canter, trot to the left, etc.)
Only one rider should be in the arena during filming.
Minimize background noise if possible.
